MacBook Pro Diaries #006: Restarting conflicts

One benefit Mac users will often tout over Windows users is that of restarting after software updates. I thought his was true but frankly my Mac restarts after software updates about as much as my Windows installation did. Here you can see some basic bits getting updated and I have to restart afterwards. So don’t think there are no more restarts in OS X, there are plenty. However the restarts are a damned sight faster than Windows XP at least.

Also I thought I’d point out that all is solved by OS X, even world conflicts:

If I could point out that the restart was needed for the Airport update. System updates usually require a restart. The little arrow next to some updates indicates a restart is needed.
Any non-system app that states it needs a restart is usually lying in my experience. The drag-n-drop install process never needs a restart and the vast majority of apps are installed thus.
Stop whinging. :)

Yes all of that is explained in the dialog. Windows is much the same though, app installs don't need restarts. Just something Mac users, of which I am now one, cannot gloat about :)

Know what really grinds my gears? Apps, and even system components, that want you to reboot after installation, but only need to update shell components and could just as well have made you logout all users and then update their precious add-ins.

For all the snobbery in Win32 land towards *nix and its "runlevel" system, it does make this sort of thing easy and fairly predictable.

Indeed. Just installed TortoiseSVN and it asked to restart Windows. Just to get itself installed into the shell.
