We are thinking of getting a 4×4 of some sort and have been looking at Subaru Foresters. Check out the Subaru Outback above though. The driver flipped it at 100kph, it rolled 4 times and she then got out, picked up her camera and took a photo of the crash. That is seriously good crash protection from the Subaru and pretty amazing robustness from the Nikon DSLR.

A friend of mine has had a Subaru Forester for several years and reckons it is by far the best car he has ever owned.

He was recently looking at trading up to a newer model but found that the engine size had increased to something like 2.5 or 2.8 litre and felt that was a little too much for his needs. So, maybe you should consider the older model for some added practicality.

Combined with your photo, it looks like it might be a safe bet though.

A 4x4 in Ireland? Really - what for?

Also - best to get an AWD in Ireland - an AWD will do better than a 4x4 - I think all Subarus are AWDs so shouldn't be a problem - I was looking at getting one here (an Impreza Wagon or an Outback) for going to the ski resorts and hiking trails up high in the mountains (lots of ice/snow on the roads and lots (and LOTS) of offroad) but people in work told me that a nomal car with suffice for 90% of the stuff - only need an AWD for snow/ice above 5000 feet they tell me - I still bought snow chains ;-)
