Desirable computing

Instead of bitching about Apple’s products and how they are so awful that people just can’t seem to stop buying them I suggest the rest of the PC industry get a cop-on and start designing products that people want. Products that not just corporate buying departments and nerds buy. Products that people want to buy.

When did you last see the latest Dell, IBM, Toshiba, HP or Fujitsu on the front-page of the world’s newspapers? Right, in an advert. Apple get it for free as the lead story because they make desirable computers.

It is not that difficult, there are many talented designers out there that Apple haven’t hired. Many hardware specialists who can fit mini-super-computers into 1 foot cubes. Take the Asus Eee and stuff it in some nice looking aluminum cladding. Boom! A portable, desirable and cheap laptop. Take your IBM ThinkPad R61 and give it form and function. Why is it OK to complain that the MacBook AIR is functionally defficient but not OK to complain that the IBM ThinkPad looks like a high-school shop-class mockup? I’d hide that ThinkPad in a manilla envelope.

Stop bitching that Apple is all form and no function, implying that this roomful of the upcoming generation are stupid to use them. Go make desirable computers.
