Google Reader’s waterfall feature
Woke up this morning to find that Google Reader thinks I have thousands of unread items. Last night I had 0 unread items. AutoBlog went from 0 to 659 unread items in a matter of hours, 90% of them I have read yesterday, the day before and so on. There were only about 5 new items in AutoBlog from my recollection.
This is the tyranny of treating RSS like email and what Dave Winer rallies against by recommending we adopt the river of news. Let it flow, let it flow, let it flow. I’m dreaming of a white…
Still, there are feeds in that mess that I want to treat like email. Their are friends’ feeds and system feeds, notifications and important trackers. It would be nice if Google Reader let me divide my feeds up into a “not like email, don’t show unread count” list and an “important, read every item” list.
For now? Mark All As Read. Anything I miss I’ll find out soon anyway, a blogger is sure to regurgitate it if it is important.
