Looking forward to PutPlace

I spotted the Tuesday Push idea and thought I’d have a look at PutPlace. I have been looking for a proper cloud-based backup service. Amazon S3 isn’t designed for backup and requires too much manual manipulation to make for a safe, regular and easy backup system.

So PutPlace sounded just right. I had heard the Mac version wasn’t ready but when I checked the help it said Vista, Mac etc. are all supported. Sadly this isn’t true, yet. I only found out though after signing up, verifying my account and going to the download page. I haven’t found anything on when the Mac client will be available. Soon as it is I’ll try it out. Till then, Windows only.

Hey Paul, since you mentioned S3, have you looked at JungleDisk?. It looks like it mounts S3 as an external drive. I haven't done much with it, apart from installing and copying a few test files.

I haven't convinced myself yet that I want cloud-based backup, from the point of view of security, reliability, and cost.

When I last tried JungleDisk it was not a fire-and-forget backup system. It required some manual dragging and dropping. I'm not sure it can even do "what has changed" partial backups even. Just checked the website and it seems to have improved though and offers automatic backups. I'll give it another go and report back.
