Miami Vice and some Pirates

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Miami Vice is the worst movie I have watched this year. I cannot even begin to tell you how poor it was. Flat. Dull. Boring. Cheap. Wandering. Vacuous. What were you thinking, Jamie Foxx?

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest on the other hand was good fun. Not as fresh and fun as the first one but worth a watch.

Fearless and the Barley

Friday, October 20th, 2006

Fearless by Ronny Yu and starring Jet Li tells a powerful story of the founding of the Jin Wu Sport Federation which brought wushu (literally “martial arts” in China) together. Fearless is easily one of the best of the run of beautiful, high-production value martial movies that have come out of the East in the past few years. Fearless is hard and gritty unlike some of the others where the fights can be choreographed till they might as well be two butterflies farting at each other in the wind.

Speaking of wind I also got to see The Wind That Shakes the Barley which is a good film. It isn’t all it is cracked up to be with my main objection being that it is neither a strong tale between brothers nor a broad story of the Irish nation. It floats between the two and loses out on both. It is still worth seeing.

Inside Man

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

The best bit of Inside Man by Spike Lee is the fantastic opening and closing track; Chaiya Chaiya Bollywood Joint. It is apparently from a Bollywood movie called Di Sel and features Punjabi MC amongst others. Bollywood hip-hop, I never thought I’d hear it but hear it I did and love it I am. Good enough that I paid €9.99 on iTunes for the entire movie soundtrack just to get that one track (the rest of the tracks are OK, movie background music really.)

You can watch a music video of Chaiya Chaiya here. It doesn’t have the rapping in the Inside Man version but gives you a reasonable idea of the track (minus the standard over-the-top Bollywood sequences.)

The movie itself is quite good. The usual Spike Lee touches, good cinematography and a resoanably smart plot (though you’ll figure it out a quarter of the way into the movie.) Worth watching.

V for Vendetta

V for Vendetta poster

To be honest I was dreading the watching of V for Vendetta. The trailers I had seen looked horrific, low grade cinema with a blunt, ridiculous story. But my girlfriend is a big fan of the graphic novel and so I rented it out. To my surprise I was gripped in the first 5 minutes and only released as the credits rolled. The movie isn’t brilliant, not by a long shot but it is well worth watching. There is a middle sequence that wavers somewhat but surrounding that is an engaging, well done movie which is appropriate to our times of Guantanamo Bay, the war on Iraq and fear at home.

In Cold Blood

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

Earlier this Sunday evening I watched Capote. In cold blood, indeed.

A handful of films only are able to show an actor as an artist. Hoffman was one in this, above the director, beyond the succinct cinematography.

As the film ends one is told Truman Capote never finished another book. It would seem this is the price he paid for what he did to finish In Cold Blood.

Munich

A good film though it wanders and could do with some focusing.

To be honest I expected a good deal more Kate Beckinsale in-tight-leather. Otherwise it was an entertaining if forgetable movie. I doubt I’ll be rushing out to watch the original.

It’s inconceivable!

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

The whole movie is inconceivable. The Princess Bride that is. What a strange, funny and wonderful movie. Completely tongue in cheek, reminding me of a saner Monty Python.

So now various friends can stop bugging me to see it. I’ve seen it, I liked it, you were all right.

The Producers

The Producers

I thoroughly recommend The Producers. It is a remake of a classic (which I haven’t watched.) I haven’t laughed so hard in a good while. Mathew Broderick shocked and amazed me, acting as I never thought he would (or could.) Uma Thurman as Ulla was hilarious and Nathan Lane is spot on for his part. Will Ferrell as Franz Liebkind… well, he is just plain nuts.

It is a wonderfully offensive movie, often reminding me of scenes from Monty Python. Pure madness but with scary elements of truth.

Don’t let the musical aspect of it put you off. You’ll be singing Hitler Youth songs by the end of it, guaranteed.
