Six sixes!

Friday, March 16th, 2007

Herschelle Gibbs just hit six sixes off six balls in one over.

That is the first time anyone has done that in international cricket. Absolutely amazing.

Mark Boucher also scored the fastest 50 in a World Cup game and SA scored the most number, 18, of sixes in a WC game.

And “Kallis and Boucher’s partnership was an incredible 134 runs from just 9.1 overs.

Wow! Just wow!

Zidane is a hero?

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

Kottke agrees that Zidane is some sort of hero for head butting Matzerati. That’s How It Happened wrote the following:

[Zidane's] willingness to headbutt Materazzi makes him more of a hero, not less. Admittedly, since France went on to lose, he’s something of a tragic hero, but a hero none-the-less. If someone insulted my race, or my religion (if I had one), I wish I’d be as ready to attack them, no matter what the circumstances. Zidane’s action highlights for the world the fact that the racial unity of France is more important than winning the World Cup.

That is bullshit. You rise above the insult, you defend your religion or race with intellect and actions that befit the pride and stature of it. By head butting you are putting weight behind the insult, acknowledging you can only reply with violence. I’ve been called some seriously insulting things for being a white South African. At least a terrorist has a cause, “one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter” and all that, but there is no arguement for being a racist (I am not one but am lumped in with all other white South Africans as being one.) I’ve never head butted someone for insulting me and yet I have never been on television at a major event in front of hundreds of millions of people with a decade long, glorious career and the weight of being a role model behind me.

Materazzi needs to be dealth with properly but Zidane does too. Both are wrong.

Go Portugal!

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

Good evening lined up. Beer, supper and France vs. Portugal.

I went into the shop earlier looking for a box of OJ and came out with a six pack of Carlsberg and a pack of crisps. Go figure.

Soccer

Monday, June 12th, 2006

I know this won’t happen but I do wish the world would call it soccer. Back home in South Africa we call it soccer, not football. The USA does it, Australia do too and so does much of Ireland. In Ireland if you asked about the football you would be quickly regaled by a bunch of GAA (pronounced “Gaah!”, not “Gee Ay Ay”) fans. Gaelic football is very popular in Ireland. Ask for football in the States and you’ll get yardages. Down under football will get you Aussie “no” Rules which makes any other sport look tame.

By the way; Google has a handy feature where you can search for “football Argentina” and the first “result” is a summary of the games. Try any team.
